Mountains

Above the territory of Maremma rises the now extinct volcano of Mount Amiata, offering an evocative landscape rich in interesting specimens of flora, fauna and a myriad of important historical remains. Water, earth, air, fire: these are the elements that make up the body and soul of Mount Amiata: from its summit one can admire the entire Maremma. Mount Amiata, rich in springs, including hot springs, as well as mineral and natural resources, offers wonderful trails running through the beech forests that blanket it. Alongside Mount Amiata stands Mount Labro, the highest peak among those surrounding this mountain zone. Most of Maremma’s territory is made up of hills, however, with mean altitudes between 200 and 400 metres above sea level. Here we find the “Tuff cities” that lie in the south-eastern end of Grosseto province, including the towns of Sorano, Pitigliano and part of Castell’Azzara. The Metalliferous Hills extend along the north of the province, gently sloping down from the mountain range of the Cornate di Gerfalco to the hills, and then on down to the wide gulf of Follonica and the northern shore of the Tuscan Maremma. It is an area rich in varied, evocative landscapes: the oak woods of the hinterland give way to the typical maquis shrubland that continues down to the sandy coastline, framed by thick evergreen pine forests. Here rise towns like Follonica and Scarlino, important tourism hubs offering beaches equipped with all the amenities for vacationers and tourists. Further to the south, in the level zone at the foot of the hills, we find the capital, Grosseto, which with its area covering 474,3 km² is the largest toscano municipality and the ninth largest in Italy nono comune italiano. Continuing inland, we are met by the hilly landscapes of charming towns like Civitella Paganico, Cinigiano, Campagnatico and Scansano, rich in vineyards and olive groves:
