Maremma Treasures: The Grand Ducal Villa of Alberese

In the heart of the Natural Park of Maremma, on a hill dominating the small town of Alberese, the Grand Ducal Villa stands with its magestic Renaissance shapes. It looks like a big three floors building, with two lateral terraces on the first floor.

The compound was built for the will of the Prior of Saint Jhon's knights of Jerusalem, when Santa Maria in Alborensis Abbey (today called Saint Rabano) decayed. The Grand Ducal Villa passed trugh many modifications during the centuries ( the most important was the building of Saint Antonys Chapel inthe XVI Century) and became a farm under the domination of Tuscany's Grand Dukes. On the First Nineties was complitely restored: a big room on the ground floor called The Hunt room became Tuscany Region boardroom; the rest of the building became an agriturism, part of Alberese regional farm. Therefore the most part of the Villa is private: the only part still accessible to the public is Saint Antony's Chapel, opened on Palm Sunday only.
