Dublin (Ireland) and Grosseto (Italy) were selected as winners of the European Capital Capital and European Green Pioneer and Smart Tourism competition, following a meeting of the European jury in Brussels on 27 and 28 November 2023.
A total of 40 destinations from 21 countries competed for the title and only 10 of them were asked to submit their applications to the European jury.
Dublin has impressed the European jury not only with its remarkable achievements in all four competition categories, but also with the exceptional programmes of activities they intend to perform for 2024. Grosseto has distinguished itself as a pioneer of sustainable tourism, demonstrating its ability to act as a model for other destinations.
Both winners will receive a sculpture specially made to be permanently displayed throughout the year as a European capital and green pioneer of smart tourism. In addition, the winners will receive promotional support and become part of the growing network of smart and sustainable tourist destinations in Europe. The network facilitates knowledge sharing and exchange of best practice through a series of workshops and the publication of a guide to best practice. The 2024 European green pioneer will play a leading role in shaping the future of sustainable tourism in the European tourism industry and will actively participate in a major impact on the international scene. The competition is based on the principle of promoting the development of sustainable tourism in destinations that brings value to the economy, the planet and people.
