CIVIL ARCHITECTURE OF ORBETELLO

Palazzo del Podestà, located in the central Piazza Eroe dei Due Mondi is surmounted by the Clock Tower;
Ancient Barracks Umberto I, formerly a Religious Institute, which hosted for a period of time the precious pediment of Talamone. This building is the centre of culture and often hosts exhibitions;
Spanish mill, one of the most fascinating symbols of Orbetello, is the only windmill that has remained of a group of nine or, according to other sources, seven mills built by the Sienese, used to grind flour for the inhabitants of the city and later restored by the Spanish when the lagoon city became the capital of the small state of Presidia (1557).
The Mill has a circular plan consisting of a tower and a cap, originally revolving, which supports the system of blades. Recent restoration work has introduced a mechanism that controls the movement of the blades and has replaced them with smaller elements than the original. The building, which emerges suggestively from the waters of the Lagoon, is located at the beginning of the artificial dam built by Grand Duke Leopold II in 1842 to connect Orbetello with Argentario.
