Coming down from the walls from Porta Nuova you walk along Corso Carducci until you reach Piazza Dante, now restored with the 19th century look. The square had over time paved and planimetric settings different. The 19th century brought numerous variations to its appearance. In 1833 the small cast-iron temple rises on an artesian well at the corner with Via Ricasoli, built in the Foundries of Follonica on a design by Francesco Leoni. The temple was removed and placed in Arcidosso on the occasion of the overall renovation of the square which is linked to the erection of the monument to Leopold II of Lorraine called Canapone (1846) in a central position.

The sculptural group, the major work of Luigi Magi (1804-1871), represents in a transparent symbolic form the positive effects of the Grand Ducal policy on the Maremma and the gratitude of its inhabitants. Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine, in a toga, in fact raised a woman, the Maremma, who holds to him a dead or dying child, the past, while another child, the present, holds confidently to the Grand Duke who tramples the snake of malaria. The group is completed by the griffin, emblem of the town community, which firmly bites the snake. The classic history of the Maremma is overshadowed by the laurel wreath on the woman’s head. On the base is the inscription:
