Diaccia Botrona is a Site of Regional Interest, testimony of what remains of the ancient swamp that characterized the Maremma plain and resulting from the progressive swamp of Lake Prile: a salt water lake from a previous sea gulf closed by a sand pit.
This particular natural environment is home to flora and fauna typical of the lake and brackish environments; birds are the undisputed masters of this portion of the territory that is between the Municipality of Grosseto and that of Castiglione della Pescaia. Among the Tuscan wetlands is the one that hosts the largest number of species of wintering water birds including flamingos, wild geese, ducks (especially mallards, teal and whistles), but also large white herons, cranes, ospreys and harriers while periodically flooded meadows are frequented by snipes, gossips and other waders.
In the open areas, Italian horsemen and big eyes nest, while the pinewood, in addition to the great egret with grey herons and egrets, hosts species of remarkable interest such as marine jay and tuft cuckoo.
The flora is instead composed of various plants typical of brackish environments such as salicornia and limonium; important are also the residues of the hygrophilous arboreal vegetation, with ossiphyll ash, elms, willows and tamarisks and white poplar.
The pine forest is located on the sandy tombolo and consists of majestic plants of domestic pine, with a dense undergrowth of Mediterranean maquis, in which they bloom cysts and rosemary. In the undergrowth are also found other sclerophyllous species such as myrtle, phyllosia angustifolia, mastic, heather and arboreal multiflora, juniper and macrocarpa, holm oak and oak. Between swamp and pine forest there are periodically flooded meadows.
