Aia Nova Villa

The Roman age, in Maremma, begins with the conquest of Vulci by the Romans, in 280 BC. From that moment, the entire coast of the Tiber to the Albegna passes under the control of Rome. At this stage, the campaigns surrounding the new settlements founded by the Romans are divided into regular lots, first around a mesh of particles that are assigned individually. Soon, even in the area of Scansano, the landscape is divided in this way and is filled with houses of settlers and farms - where wine was already produced.
The Roman villa of Aia Nova is located in the locality of Ripacci, in Scansano and is part of the second phase, when between the second century and the first decades of the first century B.C. there are the first villas: In fact, wealth is becoming concentrated and many small properties converge to form a larger one. These villas, monumental, refined and luxurious, not only residences but real companies. Among these was also the so-called villa degli Anili or villa of Aia Nova. The name was derived from a stamp on the tiles in which the name of Publius Anilius appears together with an eagle that is a symbol of the legion. It is believed that Publius Anilius was an officer on leave who was assigned, as usual at the time, a property in the territory.
