Santa Fiora - Volo della Capra

The ‘Volo della Capra’ is back in Santa Fiora!
On Sunday 30 August, the Contrada di Santa Fiora, under the patronage of the local council, is organising a day dedicated to traditional games, local traditions and regional specialities.
From 10.00 to 13.00 and from 15.30 to 18.30, the historic centre will come alive with traditional games and stalls selling local specialities, with the participation of the municipalities of Abbadia San Salvatore, Castel del Piano, Castell’Azzara, Piancastagnaio, Pienza, Seggiano, Selvena, Semproniano and Vivo d’Orcia.
At 6.30 pm, in Piazza Sant’Agostino, the final tug-of-war competition will take place.
At 7 pm, it will be time for the ‘Volo della Capra’ (Flight of the Goat), a re-enactment of an ancient Santa Fiora tradition.
This ritual, of pagan origin, was practised in Santa Fiora until about a century ago around the time of the chestnut harvest and was considered a propitiatory gesture for the year’s harvest. A tradition from a bygone era that is now commemorated through a re-enactment designed to bring the community’s customs and stories back to life.
