From 8 to 14 July 2026, “Art Nouveau Week” returns – the major international festival dedicated to Art Nouveau and the decorative arts, promoted by the Italia Liberty association and curated by Professor Andrea Speziali. Now in its eighth edition, the event transforms Italy into an open-air museum through guided tours, conferences, exhibitions, cultural itineraries, immersive experiences and artistic activities dedicated to the Belle Époque.
The central theme of the 2026 edition will be ‘The Sea’, a symbolic element that runs through the European Art Nouveau imagination and serves as the central thread of a narrative exploring the relationship between art, landscape, tourism and modernity from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century.
On Saturday 11 July at 6.00 pm, the Italia Liberty Association is organising a guided walk to explore Grosseto’s Art Nouveau architecture, a tour that offers an insight into some of the city’s most interesting architectural examples from the late 19th century to the early decades of the 20th century.
The itinerary takes participants past buildings and landmarks that symbolise a period of major urban and cultural transformation. Among the main stops is the Villino Andreini, built in 1909 as the residence of engineer Corrado Andreini, a key figure in the city’s urban development and the architect of Grosseto’s first town plan. The building is one of the earliest examples of prestigious bourgeois architecture along what is now Viale Goffredo Mameli and retains interesting Art Nouveau decorative features.
The walk continues with the discovery of other buildings characterised by the new artistic style of the era, until reaching the Villino Panichi, designed by the architect Lorenzo Porciatti. Although inspired by Neo-Renaissance models, the building stands out for its elegant Art Nouveau decorations in stone and iron, making it one of the city’s most significant examples.
The tour concludes in front of Palazzo Tognetti, which is still in use and inhabited today, bearing witness to the vitality and continuity of Grosseto’s Art Nouveau architectural heritage within the city’s urban fabric.
This initiative offers the chance to rediscover a lesser-known part of the city, interpreting its architecture as evidence of a period of growth, innovation and cultural openness.
