Monte Antico

Monte Antico: already the name makes us think of something remote and lost in time. In fact, this is how the castle looks that dominates the homonymous village from the top of a hill. It was born as a settlement before the year 1000, in a dominant position on the Ombrone valley as a possession of the Ardengheschi, who built a first castle with its court. The castle itself took on the appearance that in part still retains today during the fourteenth century, when the village passed under the control first of the Buonsignori, then of the Salimbeni up to the Tolomei in the late fifteenth century, which are due to the last changes.
During the eighteenth century there was a development of the courtyard downstream of the castle, until the construction of a real town due to the inauguration of the railway line in 1872. The castle of Monte Antico is currently used as a hotel-restaurant, while the nearby church, more recent and currently deconsecrated, has replaced the ancient parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Ancaiano that stood near the castle.
