The Sanctuary of San Giorgio is located in Montorgiali, in the municipality of Scansano.
The Sanctuary of San Giorgio, located outside the village along the road that leads to Polveraia, was originally a rural parish, transformed first into a hermitage and then into a sanctuary. Even today it is the final destination of a suggestive ride that takes place on the day of the saint’s celebrations. As per ancient statute San Giorgio is celebrated in the village on the Sunday closest to the anniversary of April 23.
On the occasion of the feast of the saint, on April 23rd, the sanctuary is the arrival point of the ride of Saint George, an evocative ceremony in which the inhabitants of Montorgiali and those of neighboring countries participate. This ancient custom aims to revive the fight of Saint George with the dragon.
