In Scansano, on the edge of the village, there is a church to which the people here refer to as the church of Madonna della Botte. If you come from Magliano in Toscana or from Manciano and Saturnia you will find it at the entrance of the village, on the right. If instead you come from Grosseto, the village you have to cross almost everything, and the church will be on the left.
The official name of the church, which you will find in the indications, is Church of the Madonna delle Grazie and the current building was inaugurated in 1867 to a design by Luigi Vannuccini. But before this neoclassical cult building, with its bell tower and rather minimalist interior, there had been a smaller chapel, built in the early seventeenth century. The chapel of the time was destroyed because of a flood that in 1862 hit the village. Fortunately it was possible to save the painting that is still placed on the altar of the church. It represents the Madonna delle Grazie, and was attributed to a Sienese painter influenced by Alessandro Casolani.
So why do Scansanesi refer to this, as the Madonna della Botte? If you look at the image of barrels, it doesn’t seem to be a trace. But the mystery is soon solved, so to speak: in fact, the legend tells that the painting would have been found in a barrel, which for some miracle rolled exactly in the place where the chapel was built. And you know, in this land of Morellino, the barrels infuse by definition a bit of sympathy. So even today this name is what popularly refers to both the painting and the church. If you come to Maremma and go through Scansano, do not forget to include this church in the sights.
