Semproniano is a small castle set on a travertine spur between the Fiora and Albegna valleys.
An evocative legend traces the name of the town to Tito Livio, who in the Historiae ad Urbe condita, liber XXXIV, tells us how, in 183 BC, by the triunviri Quinto Caio Leone, Caio Afranio Stellione and Tiberio Sempronio Gracco, was conducted in the territory of Naples, and precisely in that of Saturnia, a colony of Roman citizens to whom, having distinguished themselves in war, were assigned 10 iugeri of land each. Having completed the task, it seems that the triunviris, and here comes into play no longer the History but the legend tie their names to the main features of the beautiful landscape. So they chose a high mountain in the north, a hill in the centre and a stream in the south, equidistant from each other. Quinto Fabio Labione, gave his name to the rugged and wild mountain that since then is called' Monte Labro. Caio Afranio Stellione, I assign it to the river that since then has been called 'Stellata'. Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus, gave his name to the beautiful hill that had the name of Semproniano.
