I canti del Maggio

The characteristic Farmer's Day, which takes place on the evening of April 30 and the evening of the first of May, has an ancient and propitiatory origin, spread throughout the Maremma area; A song to convey joyful greetings for the coming of spring, hoping fertility and good harvest. From morning to night he founded the "maggyini", accompanied by poets and singers in vernacular, with a big laurel branch to which a large lemon is pinned, walk through the villages knocking home at home, asking food and drink offerings. The "maggyini" re-offer offers with songs, stornelli, quartine and octave in rhyme, in a delight of cheerfulness and colors. The campaign also runs through declarating verses and telling stories, making a stop at the casinos. They dress hats and hats decorated with paper flowers and colored ribbons. The band is accompanied by accordion and guitar. In addition to choir voices, there are various characters in the groups: the central figure of the "Poet" composing the text and intoning the "permission" to enter the farms and "thank you" before going out, always improvising verses in the "eighth rhyme" ; "The Tree Tree" which brings the floral laurel twig symbol of the feast; The "Corbellaio" responsible for collecting and storing the offers that will then be consumed in a common meal called "Ribotta".
