In gratitude for favours received. Etruscan and Roman votive offerings in the Maremma.
The anatomical clay votive offerings, tangible expressions of the popular devotion of the Etruscan and Italic peoples of ancient Italy, reveal a phenomenon that remains little understood yet was widespread and deeply rooted, persisting—with variations in form but not in substance—right up to the present day.
Starting from the archaeological evidence found in the Maremma, particularly at Roselle and Podere Cannicci (Paganico), we will examine the various aspects of this ancient popular religiosity with Fabiana Fabbri, archaeologist and author of the book “Etruscan and Roman Hellenistic Anatomical Ex Votos. Reassessing Popular Religious Expressions in Central Italy”, and with Alessandro Sebastiani, archaeologist, associate professor of Roman Archaeology at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), and director of the Impero Project.
We look forward to seeing you at MAAM on Saturday 20 June at 6.00 pm for this first, unmissable summer lecture.
Free event, BOOKING REQUIRED.
